How I Feel Affects Other People...

SOMETIMES
I WISH I WERE LUCKY

Sometimes I wish I were lucky
Instead of just so . . . good.

If I could just be lucky
I might share my luck
No (in fact) I know I would.

Some people say that I'm lucky
I correct and remind them I'm blessed
I'm fortunate, spiritual, in tune with myself
Nothing outweighs my thirst for happiness

You see luck, itself, doesn't last
It supplies a glimmer of hope or chance
Luck forces you to take risks
Being blessed allows you to take a stance

Luck can give you that "On top of the world" feeling
That instant fix of elation
Being fortunate keeps you "on top of the world"
And allows you to enjoy the sensation

Spirituality is such a popular thing now
But it means much more than meets the eye
If you get lucky enough to get spiritual
Hold on, don't let that spirit die

If you get lucky enough to find yourself
Enjoy the challenge of introspection
Realize its value toward your growth

Understand that you're supposed to have success
Your purpose is ordained
You must choose to lead a prosperous life
You must make sunshine out of rain

But, I must admit
Sometimes I wish I were lucky
Instead of just so . . . good

But would I stand out from the rest?
If you're lucky you can be in good company
If you're blessed you can be with the best

How I Feel Affects Other People...

GIVING

There’s only one true originating point
That place is called your Heart
There dwells a Kindred Spirit
And a child who won’t Age,
but ever grows Smart.

That child’s neighbors are Angels,
full of Hope and opportunity…
Their golden roads lead Happily to the King.
Your Ability to give must come from within,
And the Sweet return of your Kindness will make you Sing

For as we give, we catch up to what we’ve received
We Share our life, love, our laughter,
and trust in who we believe

We Keep our Smile Aglow with Sincerity
Our Touch, ever gentle and reassuring.
In fact we become so Humble and Silent
That some might consider us boring.

Yet it is because we are calm that we prosper.
What we give most Absolutely is our Thanks
Our wisdom has Helped us pass the test of Time,
time more precious than the money in the bank.

There’s only one True originating point
It’s the Nucleus of our dreams,
Saving us to See Another day.
Open your Hands in praise to Heaven’s glory
For what you give can never be taken Away

How I Feel Affects Other People...

I embrace my memory lapses, not stress.

When I used to speak at Senior Centers in Chicago I always reminded them to not feel embarrassed when people said they were going senile. Instead, they should let people know that they are exercising their right to forget! We do learn so much in our lives that there's no way we can remember it all. Stuff has to get pushed out as new information comes in. Computers lose memory... why shouldn't we??? (wink)

So, believe me, it is just as precious to share the thought with you as it is to read or hear you. That's also why I call my inspirational acronyms "Passing Thoughts." For what we share are mental moments... thus my 2011 theme "Happy New Moments."

I am totally loving my life in the South. It has not been the adjustment people think I'd have to go through. Mostly because moving here was my choice, and a choice I made 1/4 century ago. What joy to hear, embrace and follow God's word. When we make the decision to do or be, our commitment lasts longer. Truth be told, that's why there are so many flakey relationships. People don't want to admit to society that they chose the wrong mate. Of course the good side is that many of those trials and tribulations become testimonies... yes, I think they should stay in there and work it out. "Enough" is an individual experience.

Keep making choices. You're very good at it, and you've made more good ones than bad. Keep enjoying the growth of your faith. There is nothing like the smile that takes over your spirit when you know you've just won another scuffle. Remember, the battle belongs to the Lord... and the war is always won with the winners rarely being who they were when it started.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

I MISS ME

I thought about switching lives with you.
But I miss me already.

See, I don't know if you enjoy waking up every morning
And that happens to be one of my favorite moments
Because it starts me off having reached my primary goal of the day
For my goal everyday is to wake up tomorrow...

And I don't know if you really appreciate
how your fingers and toes move.
While I know I really get a kick out of feeling
solid, soft or sandy soil supporting my successful stride.

I happen to enjoy touching, squeezing, holding
and pointing myself in the right direction
That direction is up, (by the way) are you headed that way?
I know I am,
And I'd sure like to be in my shoes when I get there...
Because I pretty much know how I'd deal with the crowds.

Got my acceptance speech ready, and been practicing my smile
Come to think of it,
I've been working on it since I was a child.

My favorite outfit will be pressed brand new
Family, friends, teachers, heroes, TV shows,
clients, habits and hobbies
They'll all be there too.
Can't say I'd know how to handle them all,
if I woke up and found out I was you.

My mentors would take credit, while giving me praise
They'd help me relive memories and cherish new days
Oh, how I would laugh at the tough times
and the material things that were lost
And rejoice in the character they helped build
See, my life and spirit are beyond monetary cost.

Every enemy would stand in their place
and receive equal time to express the beauty they inspired
through their negativity.
Let's face it,
so many of the lessons we actually learn come from disharmony.

A selfish person made me want to share...
A jealous person helped me recognize insecurity...
A lie reminded me to tell the truth...
I remember joy & pain... I like sunshine & rain...
And it was a man who taught me how to be a man.

I've been vigilant, patient, spontaneous, loving, mean, mischievous.
Ignorant, irresponsible, (irresistible), innocent, intelligent, intuitive, intimate, interesting, introspective/indecisive, insightful/insatiable, insensitive/incredible, indispensable, independent, incoherent/incognito, indescribable, inexperienced, infallible, indestructible, inspirational, inquisitive, instinctive, instrumental, IN...
and OUT...

Outstanding/outrageous, outside/outsmarted, outspoken/outdone, outlandish/outclassed, outwitted/outcast, outnumbered, outraged, outright, outreached, outranked, outvoted, outgoing, out of sight, out of this world...
oh, yes, even out of breath…
(and almost) out of my mind,

Because, I thought about switching lives with you.
But I miss me already.

See, I don't know if you enjoy waking up every morning,
And that happens to be one of my favorite moments.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

Do you realize that negative people don't want to be around positive people?

Sometimes we look at it from the other end of the deal, but think about how your smile just gets on a negative person's nerves... like their frown can get on yours.

Stay positive to keep the negative people away.

This poem is about Rosa Parks, who knew not to listen to negative people.

Holy Rosa

Didn't we mention that the bus was only the beginning?
For this movement meant much more than a ride.
The strength in this woman was her obedience...
Yet her spirit was motivated by her pride.

Pride made a comment to Wisdom
Asked it how necessary it was to lay low?
Wisdom was no fool, it said I'll go with you...
Just promise me that you'll take it slow.

So they worked their way to the front of the bus
(these two… Pride & Wisdom)
They made no pause, as others watched and warned.

And as they sank into that seat
that moment became everlasting
For never had authority been so scorned.

Fitting that her name was Rosa
For she rose above the pain that held so many back.
The pain that says slavery is mental
And it's favorite color never has been black.

Slavery's favorite color has always been ignorance...
Ignorance (somehow) continues to erase love.
As you take your ride in this lifetime (be smart)
Make sure the driver of your bus is up above.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

THE IMPLEMENTATION CREW

So often we complain about
the Week From Hell,
where we go nothing done
because of problems, trials and tribulations.

How about the Week From Heaven,
where so many blessings showered down
that we didn’t get to do all we planned?

I wish you a Week From Heaven,
where nothing goes according to your plans…
but everything according to His master plan.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

If I can pay you to compromise
who you are…

… you should be prepared to receive
less than what you’re worth.

As we grow our businesses,
we come across several situations
that will ask us to “fake it, to make it.”

Consider the fact that you may get the business, yet you may be required to continue to be someone other than who you are.

Expect to be respected for who you are…
by first respecting yourself.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

I NEVER LOSE!

And neither should you.

Losing, like winning, is a state of mind.

When we establish a mindset
that recognizes the need to compete against ourselves,
rather than surrender to others’ standards,
our victories become more measurable and memorable.

Winning is a state of mind.

THERE’S A DIFFERENCE…

… between losing and being a loser.

Losing can be a part of life,
where things don’t come out the way you want them to.

Being a loser is a state of mind,
where you decide to surrender to the misfortune,
even though you have the opportunity
to learn from it’s setback.

Don’t let a loss make you a loser.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

YOU CAN’T STEAL MY THUNDER…

… you can only share in my blessing.

Are you afraid
that someone else will take your place
if you share the spotlight?

The truth is, whatever you do
provides the contrast I need
to express myself as unique…
and vice versa.

No one can steal your thunder…
they can only share in your blessing

How I Feel Affects Other People...

TAKE YOUR CLOTHES OFF

Now, isn't that better?
Go on, breathe. Isn't that more comfortable?
1 - 2 . . . in - out . . . hold it . . . release

You've been unnecessarily tense
Holding it all in
And in the process withholding and hurting
others and yourself.

I know how I've waited for this moment
How often I've wanted to just touch you
and say it's okay.
How I've longed to see you let go and open up. . .

You see, honesty is always the best armor.
Lies are like ill-fitting clothes
that constrict your breathing and retard your growth.
Your biting tongue returns the pain you spew forth.
And insincere actions place you in harm's way.

Yet, your truth allows you to stretch.
And as you stretch again and again, you get more energy.
Your ride becomes smooth
And your actions take on new meaning.

Meaning you've been wanting to share
for quite some time now.
So open up and speak only the truth
Because lies are like ill-fitting clothes
that constrict your breathing and retard your growth.

So take your clothes off.
Hold it . . . release . . . in - out . . . 1 - 2
Go on, breathe. Isn't that more comfortable?
Now, isn't that better?

How I Feel Affects Other People...

The only thing I really worry about is the fact that it seems
like God sometimes takes you away once you "get it"
and understand what life is all about.

When I think like that, what makes me anxious is
whether or not my pace is good enough for me
to leave the message he wants me to deliver.

Then I have to remember that I don't know the message's depth... am only responsible for delivering a small portion...
or may have delivered it already and am on overtime.

Your message will be delivered.

What is one of the messages you'd like to deliver?
One of mine is
Merry Christmas!

How I Feel Affects Other People...

Relocation can be a different mindset according to your age and stage in life. There are different goals and concerns. When I was younger and on the corporate track, I was more focused on getting involved with as much as possible in the community, etc.  Part of the fascination was due to wanting to get the company name good representation and reputation… wanting to know where to go and hang out… trying to blend in.

Now I find myself watching how others interact with one another… happy to stay home and to myself… knowing that that will shine best for my reputation.

As you move forward in your life, realize that you are 'relocating' on a daily basis. Embrace the mindsets of awareness as you look over your past, and appreciate the road you have paved for those who benefitted from your guidance. You may not know who they are.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

It's important that you don't use 'last minute' programming for teens. It makes it seem like they're an after thought, and in the process that's where you lose control of handling them... and decrease their inherent respect for you... because they see that you're not prepared for their reactions.

I recommend that you not use anything you haven't reviewed AND enjoyed. Otherwise you put yourself in the vulnerable position of experiencing the work, instead of sharing it.

When you make children an after thought, you'll end up thinking, "What was I thinking?" after what you thought...

How I Feel Affects Other People...

I know it’s a hard pill to swallow, but part of being a teenager is living the process of wanting to be accepted while trying to be independent. It’s what they’ve been taught by the same generation trying to stop them….

Many children grow up living their parents’ maniacy of Keeping up with the Joneses.  As the adults have tried to make sure their babies weren’t out-dressed or equally-dressed, they shifted that competitive mindset to children who quickly learned that they could get what they wanted by noticing, “[Sporty] has one.”

As adults we need to realize, recognize and find comfort in knowing that we only have to reach one child a day. And reload, knowing you'll have to reach THAT child again...

How I Feel Affects Other People...

While you’re pushing this generation away and “not knowing what to do with them,” by disapproving of their dress, style, piercing, tattoos, language, following the crowd… advertisers are trying to reach ‘These Kids of Today.’

Radio commercials are being created with ethnic dialect that glorifies poor grammar. I heard a commercial that stated, “… I seen my friend, and asked her….”  Personalities read scripts written by advertisers with the expressions ‘dog,’ ‘represent,’ ‘OMG….’

Billboards and TV ads have text messages and slang jingles with popular Rappers. Sponsors bankroll the non-traditional athletes with heightened sexual innuendo. Videos showcase sex, liquor and products that have absolutely nothing to do with the song. Reality TV encourages competitive disrespect of everyone....

Don’t misread this message. I’m not knocking or criticizing the advertisers, mediums or personalities. They know and acknowledge how powerful our children are. I’m asking whether or not you’re one of the voices sending them to find love where they’re accepted… then wondering aloud if they’ve lost their minds?

S.I.L.L.Y.
Self Imposed Limitations Lie to You

Take a moment, sit down,
and think about some of the things you once told yourself you couldn't (or wouldn't dare) do.

As you add up the number of hurdles
that you ended up eclipsing,
laugh at the SILLY reason you used
to keep yourself back.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

Here's what I wrote to a friend who is concerned for his sons being the only child of their ethnic background in their class... on their block... on their team....

Our children and their generation are moving more toward a multicultural existence. We hinder them from progress by keeping them believing in statistics from the past. Are we really "learning" from the past with our own flashbacks?

Children are in class with taller, fatter, smarter, cleaner, glasses wearing, deformities and children who look just like them but don't want to associate with them....

Keep giving your sons the love and direction at home, so they can lead their classmates to better understanding. Remember, Jesus was not accepted when he burst onto the scene. We get to choose the parts of the Bible we'll govern our lives by (do we?), so I lead you to Matthew 10:16-20, and try Acts 5:41... before putting a twist on what could ring a bell in Acts 7:6-7.

They're YOUR sons. Make them ready. Coach them for the long run.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

God doesn’t switch teams. You’re just in between quarters sometimes, and will have to get used to the new direction.

Some people talk about getting “mad” with God, and wondering if he’s abandoned them (hey, even Jesus asked that one). Not surprising, this questioning comes at times in our lives where we are called to make a decision about or deal with the unfamiliar.

And it’s at times like these where our spiritual connection is challenged, wondering which book in the Bible we read that had a great story from start to finish? Most of the books repeat the Victorious Cycle of challenge-faith-patience-testimony...

Get used to it.

How I Feel Affects Other People...

Most of the time kids think they can’t measure up to our standards, and they’re right… as long as they think that way.

When they show that they can, we should reach harder to erase any doubt… and they’ll believe.

Have you done anything to instill that sense in any of your children lately? I’ve asked my nieces that they COMMIT to getting good grades, rather that working hard.

How I Feel Affects Other People

“These kids of today” … are KIDS, today.

I don’t treat them like grownups. I model how to be one. And several of them who have been around since my generation has been using this terminology on them, are now my friends on Facebook. They call me mentor, friend, teacher, role model… on the phone. I value each and every one of them, look forward to hearing from them, and check up on them when I don’t.

They are in high school, college, jobs and careers. And in my heart, and with all due respect, they are still my kids!

I love my K.I.D.S.
